What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a small, titanium post that is used to attach a dental crown, replacing your missing tooth.  The post takes the place of your tooth’s root, and then the crown is made to match the coloration and texture of your surrounding teeth before it is attached to the metal implant.

What Are The Benefits Of Dental Implants?

Since the implant is made of titanium, and the crown is made from a durable composite material, they are built to last.  This means that once your implant is complete, you can smile, eat, or drink as if it was your natural tooth.  However, that means you also need to take care of it like you would your normal teeth with a proper brushing, flossing, & rinsing routine.

Another benefit of implants that often goes unnoticed is the fact that they preserve tooth-supporting bone, which naturally starts to deteriorate when you lose a tooth, which can affect the health of the surrounding teeth.  By placing an implant, the empty space from your lost tooth is filled, allowing the supporting bone & tissue to heal and support the implant, and keeping your other teeth healthy.

Finally, Implants have a documented success rate of over 95%, which is significantly higher than any other tooth-replacement options.

The Dental Implant Process

The implant process begins with attaching the metal implant to your jawbone, just as the roots of your teeth do.  In order to place the implant, your doctor will perform a minor surgical procedure that only requires local anesthesia.  Securing the implant to your jawbone is essential, since it will ensure that the dental crown is held firmly in place, and so that the feeling of the implant will match that of your natural teeth.

After the procedure, your doctor will allow the area to heal, which can take a few months.  During this period, the implant will become fused to your jawbone.  Once it’s completely healed, the final crown is attached and your smile will be complete once again!

Tooth Replacement Options Using Dental Implants

Implants can replace missing teeth in a variety of ways. They can be used to:

Dental Implants Replace One Tooth.

Replace One Tooth

When replacing a single missing tooth, we will use a single implant that will be inserted into your jawbone through the process described above.  A single crown that is crafted to perfectly match the look and feel of your natural teeth will then be attached to the implant.  The implant will never decay (but the crown can), and will never require a root canal treatment.

Dental Implants Replace Multiple Teeth.

If you are missing more than just one tooth, implants can still provide a very effective, natural looking replacement for your teeth.  In certain cases, you may not need an implant for each missing tooth, such as if you’re missing three teeth in a row.  In this case, two implants can function as a support for a dental bridge, which is made up of three dental crowns that are all connected.

Dental Implants Replace All Teeth.

Replace All Teeth Permanently

Implants can be used to support an entire arch of upper or lower replacement teeth that will be permanently attached to the implants.  While it varies on a case-to-case basis, it is possible for a full set of new teeth to be supported to as little as four implants.  It all depends on your jawbone density and if your bone has deteriorated after losing your teeth, with weaker jawbones needing more implants for support.

Dental Implants Support Removable Dentures.

Support Removable Dentures

For patients with dentures, your doctor can use implants to make wearing dentures more comfortable to wear, with the added benefit of slowing the deterioration of your jawbone for a healthier, stronger mouth.  Traditional dentures rest on your gums, putting pressure on the underlying bone and accelerating bone loss, causing your jaw to shrink and making your dentures slip.  By securing the dentures to implants, that pressure is transferred to you’re the internal jawbone instead of the bone surface.

Implant Care and Maintenance

While a dental implant can’t decay due to being made of titanium, there are still two ways that an implant can lose attachment to your jawbone after it has been fused: poor oral hygiene or excessive pressure on your teeth.

Poor oral hygiene is not only can cause an serious bacterial infection in the area surrounding your implant, it will also deteriorate your other natural teeth, which can lead to you needing more dental work in your future.  Avoid this with a proper daily routine of brushing and flossing, and don’t forget to visit us for your regularly scheduled cleanings.

Excessing pressure puts stress on your jawbone, which will affect the strength of the bone and the support of the implant and your other teeth.  This pressure can come from habits of clenching or grinding your teeth, which can be counteracted by wearing a nightguard when you go to sleep, helping protect your jawbone & implants.
